What is MV-HEVC spatial video?

Understand the multiview format Apple uses to store separate viewpoints for spatial playback.

More than an ordinary HEVC file

MV-HEVC extends HEVC with multiple views. Apple spatial video stores information for separate viewpoints so supported systems can present binocular depth instead of showing only a flat frame.

Capture and conversion are different

Compatible Apple cameras record two viewpoints directly. A converter such as Twineye starts with one viewpoint, estimates depth and synthesises another. Both may use MV-HEVC output, but their source information is not the same.

Why metadata matters

Spatial metadata tells Apple platforms how the views relate and how the content should be presented. A file can contain stereoscopic images without being interpreted as Apple spatial video if required metadata is missing.
